I don't think I would have picked this book up on my own. I received it as a gift from a co-worker. This is the first autobiography I have read that paints such dark pictures in such a light manner. Many times throughout Mr. Hammond's book I found myself laughing out loud at some of the situations that might not normally be so funny. It was pretty insightful to see the other side of someone who spent a big chunk of their life in front of the cameras and in America's living rooms. To read that at times Mr. Hammond was close to death due to alcohol and drug abuse was a fresh reminder that we are all fighting the same fight, life. It is imperative that we acknowledge the havoc that abuse, drug and alcohol use create in the lives of people. No one is exempt. Celebrities, athletes, and other people who are often in the public eye are marked by all of life's vices the very same way that John D. from apt 3B is. On a lighter note it was a great pleasure to be taken behind the scenes of one of the most entertaining and star producing shows in television history. Many talented actors have started on Saturday Night Live and it was a lot of fun to see the inner workings of their beginnings.
Thank you Mr. Hammond for sharing some of your closest secrets. I know by any means it is not easy. And best wishes on your continued life of sobriety.
